Board Brokers Hardwax Oil: Application Guide
Board Brokers Hardwax Oil + Board Brokers Hardwax Oil Color must be stirred well before use, in order to obtain an optimal mixture of the waxes and pigments. Board Brokers Hardwax oils should be evenly applied with cloths or pads. You should always apply at least two layers the first time, e.g. 2 layers of Colorless, 2 layers of Color or 1 layer of Color and 1 layer of Colorless, etc.
Board Brokers Hardwax Oils have a drying time of 2 to 4 hours and an additional layer can be applied after 8 to 10 hours, at 20°C and a relative humidity of < 65%.
1 litre for 12 to 20 m² (130-215 sq. ft.) per layer, depending on the porosity of the floor to be treated.
Testing the Surface
Before applying Board Brokers Hardwax Oil on hard woods such as Wengé, Meranti, Merbau and Jatoba, you should first carry out a test. Floors to be treated with Board Brokers Hardwax Oil should be dry, clean and have grease-free. First repair any scratches and holes. Maximum wood humidity should be less than 15%.
Sanding the Floors
The wooden floors to be treated should be well sanded, not too fine - without scratches! It is also important to make sure you remove any grease and dust. When applying colored Board Brokers Color Hardwax Oil, you should sand thoroughly beforehand. The color will come out darker on roughly sanded areas than on finely sanded areas.
Applying the Oil
Hardwax oils are NOT varnishes or paints that create a protective layer on top of the wood and that have a certain resistance to wear and tear. Hardwax oil penetrates into the wood! Board Brokers Hardwax Oil can be applied with an applicator, brush or roller and whether or not massaged or rubbed in with a cloth or the Board Brokers machine + white or beige polishing pad.
Apply the product with an applicator for instance over an initial strip 80 cm wide along the grain of the wood. Rub it in first against the grain and then along the grain.15 minutes after the first strip has been treated with the oil across the full length of the room, you must start rubbing in this strip. You can do this by hand or with the polishing machine+ white or beige polishing pad.
For the second strip use a working width of maximum 60 cm so that the overlap of the strips is easy to work in without the user being immersed in oil. The second and following strips must all be rubbed in each time within 15 minutes after applying the oil.
Important: Because the system dries to a large degree through oxidation, you should ensure sufficient ventilation. And always let cloths or pads used dry in open air to prevent spontaneous combustion!
Once you have applied the oil to the entire room, you need to polish and check that all the oil has been evenly rubbed in. In order to avoid damaging the fresh layer of oil while working, it is best to move around on beige pads or cloths. You should place these under your shoes (avoid rubber soles) so that you can slide around on these protective pads.
Don’t run the polishing machine over the oiled floor. If you change polishing pads when they are saturated, you should put some form of protection under the wheels (e.g. cloth or beige pad) in order to avoid contact with the fresh oil.
Hang the cable of the machine over your shoulder and make sure it does not get dragged through the wet oil.
Board Brokers COLOR Hardwax Oil white ceruse
White ceruse is a more densely pigmented shade than the wood colors, and it is made with finer pigmentations that are able to penetrate deeper into the wood.
For a strong ceruse effect you should open up the grain of the wood with a wire brush or roughly sand it with a P60 or P80 grain sandpaper along the length of the wood. This technique is used above all on plank flooring and parquet floors where the wood is laid lengthwise.
If the floor is just finely sanded with P100 or P120 grain sandpaper, the white ceruse oil will only accentuate the joins, scratches and split knots. The smooth parts will only take on a slightly white or gray sheen.
If you choose to rub in with a cloth instead of using a machine with a beige pad, ensure that you use a cotton cloth that does not shed fluff. Apply even pressure on the floor and work along the length of the wood. When rubbing in, you can define the intensity of the color by rubbing in lightly or heavily. The result will always be darker when applied by hand, then when using a machine.
Adding a Thicker Coating
You can also create a thicker coating by applying Board Brokers Hardwax Oil with a mohair roller and brushing it immediately afterwards with a brush that is at least as wide as the plank. Brushing afterwards should just be a case of stroking from left to right and from right to left along the length of the wood and in such a way as to avoid any stop and start marks.
When rubbing in with a cloth, and if you are working towards obtaining a thicker coating, the drying time will be 8 to 24 hours instead of 8 to 10 hours when rubbing in with a machine. There is a greater quantity of wax-oil on the surface that needs to dry!
